Our Motto: Always Drink Good Wine™ !

I know I have not been corresponding a lot as of late. I have a good excuse - I was very busy making people happy with their wine ideas, shipping, etc.

Happy New Year to all of you, your families, friends and colleagues!

2008 was an amazing year for Golden Gate Wine Cellars. The move to our new showroom was a headache, but we are happily settled into our new space and we have made a lot of friends in the new neighborhood. My family loves our new location as I am only 5 minutes away from my home, 5 minutes away from my wife's office and 5 minutes away from Milayna's Elementary School. And the new neighborhood is very nice as well on top of that!

To recap the year:
I tasted a lot of wine, some very (outrageously) good ones, some very (awful, painful) bad ones.It is always my goal to find the very best ones for you, and I hope I succeeded with that.GGWC celebrated another anniversary that and the fact that we ended the year on a positive note (we don't owe anyone any money, and we are in positive territory) which many companies could not say for this year.

On that note, I want to THANK YOU, my loyal customers/friends, and my new ones for all the support this year. I am putting on my thinking cap as I am writing this, as to what I can do to make it even better in 2009.

Locally, we will be conducting more wine tastings, beginning with the Valentine's Day Wine Event (more about this on our site shortly).

Nationally, we will come to you showcasing what "hard-to-find" California wine country is all about, and will have the calendar up shortly as well.

In lieu of the national problem(s), I have made the "executive decision" to extend our FREE SHIPPING offer until mid January 2009.

I want to wish all of you a healthy, prosperous and spectacular 2009, and look forward to meet many of you in person. After all, I am a lucky man, one who turned his hobby into a profession, and my audience has been amazing. Thank you!

A very humbled,

Frank Melis

Frank’s New York Wine Tasting Event

I had a blast in New York City last week. I took my wife and two daughters along for some R & R. The weather gods were on our side, as it was nice and sunny the entire time we were there. As for the tasting itself, we had a nice turnout, and I was glad to see some “old” faces and meet up with some new ones as well. We had a nice line up of wines and Fresh Direct did a good job with the food platters we had ordered from them.

In the white wine category, the 2006 Carica and Saracina Sauvignon Blancs, and 2007 Luli and 2006 Fantesca Chardonnay showed amazingly well. In the red wine section, Wilson’s 2005 “Sawyer” Zinfandel, Trespass 2005 Cabernet Franc, Page 2005 “Revolver” Cabernet Franc, Clark Claudon 2005 “Estate” Cabernet Sauvignon as well the 2005 Barlow “Estate” Cabernet were a big hit.

All together a grandiose evening of great wine and conversation.

We did some good lunching and dining, visited some “touristy” locations and experienced a lot of the great things New York City has to offer. Of course the noise, crowds and occasional rudeness is to be expected.

If I can recommend a few places to dine on your next trip, make sure to put the following on your list.

Alfama, Balthazar , Veritas, Bistro Cassis and Pommes Frites if you want to experience the way Belgian folks eat and make french fries. Also Balducci’s delicatessen is a great place to pick up some well-prepared hot meals. We took advantage of this since we stay next door.

As for the upcoming holidays, make sure to take advantage of our FREE SHIPPING offer. You can either call, email or order on-line.

Here are few wines that are starting to sell out well before our newsletter will arrive in your email (or snail) box.

White Rock 04 Cabernet Sauvignon “Laureate” , Napa Valley -- Retail 55.00 – GGWC 46.00
I can’t believe it, but White Rock is approaching 20 years in business! I fondly recall their 1987 Claret, which was their second release. This vintage could have been a “claret” as well, but since it has 75% Cabernet as well as 20 % Cabernet Franc, 3 % Merlot, and 2 % Petit Verdot, the “Laureate” was born. White Rock is an amazing property. Nestled on and between a few mountain slopes, this estate has been able to produce old-world-style wines from its property for nearly two decades now. I would say that the 2004 is one for the books! It exhibits powerful, dark fruit aromas and a rich, broad mouth-feel. Ripe blackberry and currant are complemented by undertones of coffee and vanilla bean. Notes of chocolate and a hint of licorice linger through a finish of lush tannins and dark plum.

Fisticuffs 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley – Retail 33.00- GGWC 29.99
For those who dream of big and expensive Cabernets and don't want to pay the big bucks... I got news for you! I heard rumors that the juice that does not make it into Hourglass, one of those $140.00+ wines, goes into the Fisticuff label. By no means, this is a great wine not a reject! This wine is the real deal. Intense Cabernet aromas with hints of vanilla, plum and black cherry aromas. Medium to full in body with lively and lush fruit on the palate that gives a real "punch" into a long and pleasantly flavorful almost silky finish. This is a wine that would go well with some hardy red meats, a rack of lamb or steak.

Page - Revolver 2005 Cabernet Franc “The Fury”, Napa Valley -- Retail 50.00 – GGWC 44.99
Like the other wines of Page Wine Cellars, this is artisan winemaking at its best: hand-worked and hand-crafted. This is no ordinary Cab Franc! Brash, yet supple...the Cabernet Franc shows its true colors
by expressing deep blackberries laced with a hint of dried thyme. This wine is aged for 28 months in 100% French oak. Truly an eyebrow raiser...enjoy!!! (Yes, there is a story behind the nick-name ‘The Fury’ but it is unbefitting for print).

Kokomo 2006 Cuvee, Sonoma County – Retail 24.00 – GGWC 19.99
This is “Bordeaux meets the Rhone.” A blend of Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah, this dense, dark and very intensely concentrated wine (almost black in color) is very complex on both the nose and palate. It has a luscious flavorful body, lots of black cherry, chocolate, and even a hint of tobacco and minerality as well. This young puppy is a great value, and a stellar holiday wine!

Gargiulo 2005 Aprile “Super Oakville Red” Napa Valley -- Retail 50.00 – GGWC 44.00
Gargiulo’s Super Oakville Red Aprile is their “Super Tuscan.” It is produced from a 1.5 acre block on the Money Road Ranch (Estate), in the heart of Napa Valley’s Oakville district. It has aromas of violet, cherry, sage and wild flowers. On the palate, the aromas translate into lush flavors of currant, black cherry, and blueberry all supported by ripe tannins which create a dusty finish. The mouth feel of this wine is lush and lingering, almost visceral, for their interpretation of its ‘Super Tuscan’ 97 Sangiovese and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon were blended to craft a wine with a deep ruby color, complexity and long, broad finish.

Paloma 2006 Merlot, Estate Spring Mountain Napa Valley -- Retail 65.00 – GGWC 56.00
This must have been one of the best endeavors put together by Paloma. This limited release offers an aroma of chocolate, toffee and black cherry. Full in body with lots of intensity and juicy flavors, the wine screams with black cherries and with some sweet, subtle vanilla in the background. Lush and fleshy, and all that a Merlot should be, this well-made wine is very intense and shows nicely from start to the long, elegant, silky finish.

Lioco 2006 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard, Sonoma Coast --Retail 60.00- GGWC 52.99
Only 256 cases were produced! Here, Pinot Noir's orchestral prowess is on display. The seductive Mount Eden clone at David Hirsch's property hits octaves so high, you wonder how such an elixir came from humble grapes. It's as though a liqueur was made from rose petals and red raspberries. **LIMITED **

B. Kosuge 2006 Pinot Noir Manchester Ridge, Mendocino – Retail 44.00- GGWC 39.99
I have long admired the wines of the cooler parts of Mendocino County, like the Anderson Valley, for their “lightness” (by that I don’t mean light bodied) and perfume. They seem to dance across the tongue, without sacrificing richness or body, which seems to me to be the definition of a great Pinot Noir. The wines from Manchester are somewhat more sinewy than their counterparts from down below. The 2006 has a lovely perfume, is medium-full bodied and has a lot of flavor packed onto a lithe frame. Now, pretty grapes don’t automatically translate into beautiful wine, but in this case there is an unblemished purity to the flavors in this wine that is pretty irresistible. 300 cases produced.

Stephen Test 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, O'Neel Ranch, Russian River – Retail 25.00 – GGWC 21.00
This Sauvignon Blanc is a real “test” for those who “know” wine. Yes, it underwent malolactic fermentation, but it was suppressed to retain the real Sauvignon qualities! The finished wine is complex with subtle hay, melon and pear notes. It is relatively low in alcohol and retains the crisp acidity of the cool-climate site. It's going to be perfect with seafood or as an appetizer-type wine for the upcoming holiday season!

Spencer Roloson 2007 Viognier, Knight’s Valley – Retail 32.00 – GGWC 25.00
100% Viognier grapes from the infamous Condrieu clone were used in the production of this wine. The wine is rich and intense on the nose and palate. With tangerine and pineapple fruit that integrates with classic flavors of beeswax, apricot and the exotic floral, anise, and bee pollen aromas. A bright beam of acidity elevates the finish, supporting the rich minerality of this medium to full-bodied wine.

Of course make sure to inquire about our various gift case selections. As it has been the case for many years now, the most popular giftcases is:

Igneous 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley – Retail 105.00 – GGWC 95.00
This winery has turned lots of heads the last couple of years, and they might have hit the jackpot with this latest release. For those who bought the 03 & 04 vintages, I can honestly say that this one tips them both. Igneous was created in 2002 after the owners were able to secure grapes from the Thorevilos Vineyard, owned by David Abreu. The 2005 is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot sourced from both the Thorevilos, and Igneous estate, which is managed by Abreu. This wine continues to develop wonderfully! The visual begins with an incredible deep garnet and plum color. Deep and complex aromas of ripe black cherry and blackberry delightfully lift out from the glass that are met moments later with surrounding scents of barrel vanillin. The volume and viscosity of this wine is seamless from front to back. Showy flavors of cherry, cassis and dried berry provide great intensity of fruit. The integration of tannin and structure in the back of the palate carry this wine’s lengthy finish. Seductive in its demeanor, this wine has plenty of personality.

Grasso 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley -- Retail 54.00 – GGWC 48.00
Only 525 cases of this handcrafted wine were produced. The aroma is very complex with layers of black cherry, ripe plum, toffee, creamy vanilla and bay leaf, followed by hints of cigar tobacco, amaretto, olive, black pepper and white chocolate. The flavors that unfold on the palate are bright cherry and cranberry, caramelized toasty French oak, cloves, cedar spice and mocha.

Robert Foley 2006 Claret, Napa Valley -- Retail 135.00 – GGWC 119.99
Robert Foley has not let me down in all the years of his winemaking, and this 2006 is yet another statement of his dominance! This wine is well- balanced on both the nose and palate. It offers a dense purple-colored hue showcasing a very intense almost sweet aroma with hints of crème de cassis, chocolate, and black stone fruit. Although big and intense on its approach, this wine is nevertheless very sexy and pleasant. Some time in the cellar needed.

White Rock 04 Cabernet Sauvignon “Laureate”, Napa Valley -- Retail 55.00 – GGWC 46.00

O’Dwyer 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Clare Valley -- Retail 75.00 – GGWC 68.00
The 2006 O’Dwyer was (93%) sourced from the Estate property which was planted 70 years ago. Another 7% Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from one of O’Dwyer’s neighboring vineyards in the Clare Valley . The wine has notes of roasted coffee with hints of blackberry, and a touch of sweet, toastiness. On the palate this meaty wine is dense, lively, and very well-balanced. This youngster has modest tannin levels, which I would call silky, and they seem to smooth out even more on the finish. The wine is amazingly artistic, lush and rich with a long finish. A real “piece de résistance” and I am sure it will get many lookers when the press gets a hold of this one! Only 400 cases produced (100 cases for the US )

Culler La Palette 2005 Cabernet -- Retail 55.00 – GGWC 49.50
Karen Culler’s La Palette is a blend of 91 Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit Verdot. Due to the addition of the Petit Verdot, this wine is densely saturated on both the nose and palate. Its flavor is rich with a touch of sweet black cherry fruit and cassis and a touch of toasty vanilla. The wine is lush and elegant and flows over the tongue like expensive silk! This well-structured wine could use some time in the cellar, although after decanting for a good hour, its true colors true colors will show!

Baldacci 2005 Cabernet Stag’s Leap District Napa Valley -- Retail 70.00 – GGWC 62.00
The Baldacci’s Black Label Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet. It was aged in 70% new French oak barrels for 20 months and bottle aged for 14 months prior to release. The integrated aromas of cigar box, rose petals, and cassis linger in this classic, Old World style Cabernet as you taste the wine. Dusty tannins highlight the ripe plums, leather and brambly notes. Hints of fig and bittersweet chocolate powder linger on the palate as the wine expands into an outstanding finish. The complexity and balance on this wine makes it enjoyable now, in its youth, but you will be rewarded to lay it down and enjoy this wine in a few years as the dense flavors soften and integrate.

Blackbird 2006 “Illustration” Proprietary Red, Napa Valley -- Retail 99.00 – GGWC 87.99
This has become a “collector item” only after a few vintages! Some of you might not know this, but this vineyard has been around for years! Paul Hobbs and Mia Klein (Selene), used to buy the Cabernet and Merlot and produced a “Blackbird” designated wine from this estate. After the success that both winemakers had with this vineyard, it was a no-brainer for the owner to start making his own wine. He hired Sarah Gott, who has been doing a stellar job with this vineyard! This release is a blend of 86% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon Optimal after decanting. This elegant, full-bodied wine unfolds with aromatic notes of black cherry, toffee, cocoa powder, iris flower, and subtle leather. Upon entry, the rich, focused core, with its boastful concentration, leads to intense flavors of bramble berries and roasted meat. Framed by persistent acidity and an elegant structure, the finish “illustrates” the wine’s longevity.

Gain Bay 2006 Proprietary Red, Napa Valley – Retail 25.00 – GGWC 19.99
Pete did it again - A well-priced wine from Napa ! A rare feat in the days of $100.00+ wines. As it was the case with the two previous releases, this puppy is ready upon uncorking. This latest release offers a nice array of spicy red stone fruit with a touch of sweet oak. Full in body and laced with flavorful lush fruit on the palate, this wine drinks very well now, and will do so for a few years to come. Hurry for this price—it will be gone in no time!

This is “ Bordeaux meets the Rhone .” A blend of Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah, this dense, dark and very intensely concentrated wine (almost black in color) is very complex on both the nose and palate.

Gargiulo’s Super Oakville Red Aprile is their “Super Tuscan.” It is produced from a 1.5 acre block on the Money Road Ranch (Estate), in the heart of Napa Valley ’s Oakville district.

Paradigm 2005 Merlot, Estate Napa Valley - Retail 50.00 - GGWC 43.99
Paradigm continues to produce very consistent delicious wines. The 2005 release was one of the smallest on record, but one of their best effort yet to date! The wine kicks off with a deep ruby color and offers a pleasant, but intense aroma of black stone fruits, a hint of spice and toastiness. On the palate, a similar flavor profile works it way through the center with ripe fruit flavors predominating the scene. The wine is full in body and mouth coating with lovely and forward flavors and balanced acidity. The wine finishes long and elegant with silky tannins. This 500 case production will be gone in no-time, and for those fans of Heidi Barrett, I would not pass up any of her wines!

Jelly Roll 2006 Syrah, Santa Barbara --Retail 40.00 – GGWC 35.00
This stellar Syrah was sourced from the well-regarded Larner and Stolpman vineyards, and those familiar with these sources know that they produce killer juice! This lush, full-bodied Syrah offers a powerful blackberry and cassis aroma and flavor on the silky but intense palate. The wine “rolls” over the palate like a sweet “Jelly” candy. Limited production!

Saracina 2005 Petite Sirah, Mendocino -- Retail 27.50 – GGWC 23.99
The Petite Sirah was sourced from two vineyards, an old-vine block in the McDowell Valley planted in 1948, and a younger, steep, hillside block in the Ukiah Valley . In both of these vineyards, berry and cluster size were very small and crop levels were well below two tons per acre, giving great concentration and depth to the finished wine. With fruit like this, winemaking becomes almost an afterthought, especially with the likes of David Ramey at the helm. The 2005 Petite Sirah exhibits an inky blue/black color and vivid black raspberry, blackberry and floral notes. It is a big wine but surprisingly civilized and supple on the palate, accessible now but worthy of holding for a generation. 268 cases produced only!

Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir "Red Dog" Sonoma Mountain -- Retail 50.00 – GGWC $44.95
Reflecting its mountainside ancestry, this wine is large-scaled, yet manages to retain elements of elegance and grace. This is a complex, layered wine with notes of sweet blueberry, dusty raspberry, star anise, and cinnamon on the nose. It manages to find that rare balance between a tight structure and a lush, round mouthfeel. In the mouth, sweet red fruit, spicy vanilla notes, and an alluring flavor profile that is backed by loads of very fine-grained tannins. There are subtle layers of orange zest, cocoa and raspberry. We recommend decanting for immediate enjoyment. While approachable now, this (big) Red Dog should really start to show its best in a few more years. Only 272 cases produced.

2006 Lioco Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard, Sonoma Coast --Retail 60.00- GGWC 52.99
Only 256 cases were produced! Here, Pinot Noir's orchestral prowess is on display. The seductive Mount Eden clone at David Hirsch's property hits octaves so high, you wonder how such an elixir came from humble grapes. It's as though a liqueur was made from rose petals and red raspberries. **LIMITED **

Cima Collina 2005 Pinot Noir Hilltop Ranch, Monterey --Retail 68.00 – GGWC 59.00
This is the inaugural vintage of the Hilltop Ranch Vineyard from the nice folks at Cima Collina. The grapes from this vineyard are generally of small size and are much darker and richer than most Pinot Noir fruit, which is attributed this to soil, clonal selections, and climate. This wine is powerful, dark, and rich with aromas and flavors of plums, blueberries, earth, smoke and spice. It will benefit from some bottle ageing now since it is still in its infancy, and since it’s a well-structured wine, it will age in the cellar for at least the next 6-10 years.

B. Kosuge 2006 Pinot Noir Manchester Ridge, Mendocino – Retail 44.00- GGWC 39.99
I have long admired the wines of the cooler parts of Mendocino County , like the Anderson Valley , for their “lightness” (by that I don’t mean light bodied) and perfume.

Jelly Jar 2006 Zinfandel, Nova Vineyard Lake County -- Retail 25.99 – GGWC 22.99
This is not a joke. The folks at Jelly Jar put a stellar wine in the bottle (not jar)! Working with 40+ year old vines, it is not hard to come up with a great wine (not!). But these guys surprised me, and after tasting the wine I was sold. Lush fruit explodes on entry. Bright color and intense aromas of black fruit and black pepper, with a touch of chocolate and coffee bean, are found in this 200 cases production wine. The wine is medium to full in body with an elegant and long lasting finish. Don’t wait too long to order!

2006 Licoo Proprietary Red “Indica” Mendocino -- Retail 22.50 – GGWC 18.99
This blend of Petite Sirah and Carignane is a fun Fall/Winter blend from the guys at Lioco. Bright, and lively on its feet. A wine of medium weight and moderate alcohol. Seductive and feminine with flesh in all the right places. Driven by Morello cherries, violets and freshly ground Moroccan spice. Reminds me of a young Dolcetto or a cru Beaujolais .

White Rock 2006 Estate Chardonnay, Napa Valley – Retail 33.00 – GGWC 29.00
The 2006 Chardonnay is characterized by bright fruit and minerality. The wine opens with scents of lime, quince and linden flower. Fresh white peach and pear complement the creaminess lent through sur-lie ageing. The length of the finish and crisp acidity provide for an unusually refreshing chardonnay.

2006 Lioco Chardonnay, Charles Heintz Sonoma Coast -- Retail 50.00 – GGWC 43.00
The rich, amber color suggests the use of oak barrels (none were used). The perfume is at once exotic and high toned recalling night blooming jasmine, ginger, and lemon blossoms. But there are deeper, bass-tones too like raw honey and wet slate. The attack is mouth-coating, demonstrating the wine’s prowess through its sheer viscosity. Still, a vibrant acidity cuts through the honeycomb, candied ginger, and lemon peel flavors. Only 332 cases produced!

2007 Lioco Chardonnay, Sonoma County --Retail 22.50 – GGWC 19.99
This wine is a blend from various sites in the creek-bed soils of Dry Creek, Chalk Hill, Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley . This wine is flavorful and aromatic on impact. Very well balanced, and very well priced!

Vogelzang 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Barbara -- GGWC 32.00 – GGWC 27.99
Elegant intensity is the most appropriate way to describe the 2007 offering. This wine bursts with distinct and clear fruit expressions of pineapple, pear, and lime, complimented with a wonderful minerality reminiscent of Bordeaux Blanc that we now recognize as a classic Vogelzang Vineyard aroma profile. The mouthfeel is amazingly broad and rich, yet it maintains an excellent natural acidity true to the varietal. Seamlessly elegant from start to finish.

Stephen Test 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley – Retail 25.00 – GGWC 21.00

Saracina 2007 Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Mendocino Retail 28.00 – GGWC 23.99
The Saracina folks are all about bio-dynamic, organic farming! Their 25+ year old, low yield organically farmed vineyards produce intense fruit with excellent varietal character. With David Ramey on board, this venture can only get better! The 2007 SB shows the strengths of a great vintage and the complexity of old vines and clones. The palate shows the weight of extended lees contact perfectly balanced by clean, vibrant acidity that lends length, persistence, and a stunning inner mouth perfume. Aromas of Anjou pear, grapefruit and wet stones remind you of how complex and serious a well made Sauvignon can be.

Spencer Roloson 2007 Viognier, Knights Valley – Retail 32.00 – GGWC 25.00
100% Viognier grapes from the infamous Condrieu clone were used in the production of this wine. The wine is rich and intense on the nose and palate. With tangerine and pineapple fruit that integrates with classic flavors of beeswax, apricot and the exotic floral, anise, and bee pollen aromas. A bright beam of acidity elevates the finish, supporting the rich minerality of this medium to full-bodied wine.

Bernard Kieren 2006 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling “Spatlese” Mosel -Retail 31.50 – GGWC 26.50
Only 300 cases were produced of this “Spatlese”, which means late harvest in German. This is a vineyard that produces age worthy wines. This wine offers a very good interplay between floral flavors, mineral acidity and citrus aromas. It is crisp and transparent with precise balance and a classic Mosel profile. Long, mouthwatering finish. Perfect balance, weight and acidity, and very well-structured with a touch of tropical fruit at the end.

Igneous 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley – Retail 105.00 – GGWC 95.00
This winery has turned lots of heads the last couple of years, and they might have hit the jackpot with this latest release. For those who bought the 2003 and 2004 vintages, I can honestly say that this one tips them both. Igneous was created in 2002 after the owners were able to secure some Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Thorevilos Vineyard, a vineyard owned and operated by David Abreu in St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain. The 2005 is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot sourced from both the Thorevilos Vineyard, located in the eastern hills of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain, which is owned and managed by David Abreu, and the Huckfeldt Ranch Vineyard a.k.a. the Igneous estate, located in the Coombsville area of east Napa and also managed by David Abreu. This wine continues to develop wonderfully! The visual begins with an incredible deep garnet and plum color. Deep and complex aromas of ripe black cherry and blackberry delightfully lift out from the glass. Moments later they are met with surrounding scents of barrel vanillin reminiscent to past memories in a candle shop. Enjoy now to 2018 or longer

White Rock 04 Cabernet Sauvignon “Laureate” Estate, Napa Valley -- Retail 55.00 – GGWC 46.00
I can’t believe it but White Rock is approaching 20 years in business! I recall fondly their 1987 Claret, which was their second release. This vintage could have been claret as well, but since it has 75% Cabernet (as well as 20 % Cabernet Franc, 3 % Merlot, and 2 % Petit Verdot, the “Laureate” was born. The Vandendriesche’s have an amazing property in the Stag’s Leap appellation of the Napa Valley. The vineyards nestled on and between a few mountain slopes, this estate has been able to produce old-world-style wines from its property for nearly two decades now.

Page - Revolver 2005 Cabernet Franc “The Fury”, Napa Valley -- Retail 55.00 – GGWC 44.99
As with the other wines of Page Wine Cellars, this is artisan winemaking at its best; hand-worked and hand-crafted.
(Yes, there is a story behind the nick-name, ‘The Fury’...but it is unbefitting for print)

Gargiulo 2005 Aprile “Super Oakville Red” Napa Valley --Retail 50.00 – GGWC 44.00
Gargiulo’s Super Oakville Red Aprile is their “Super Tuscan.” It is produced from a 1 1/2 acre block on the Money Road Ranch (Estate), in the heart of Napa Valley’s Oakville district. It has aromas of violet; cherry, sage and wild flowers. On the palate the aromas translate into lush flavors of currant, black cherry and blueberry all supported by ripe tannins which create a dusty finish. The mouth feel of this wine is lush and lingering, almost visceral. For their interpretation of its ‘Super Tuscan’ 97 Sangiovese and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon were blended to craft a wine with a deep ruby color, complexity and long, broad finish.

2006 Lioco Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard, Sonoma Coast -- Retail 60.00- GGWC 52.99
Only 256 cases were produced! Here, Pinot Noir's orchestral prowess is on display. The seductive Mount Eden clone at David Hirsch's property hits octaves so high, you wonder how such an elixir came from humble grapes. It's as though a liqueur was made from rose petals and red raspberries. **LIMITED PRODUCTION**

Paradigm 2005 Merlot, Estate Napa Valley -- Retail 50.00 - GGWC 44.99
Paradigm continues to produce very consistent delicious wines. The 2005 release was one of the smallest on record, but one of their best effort yet to date! The wine kicks off with a deep ruby color and is offers a pleasant, but intense aroma of black stone fruits, a hint of spice and toastiness. On the palate a similar flavor profile works it way through the center with ripe fruit flavors predominating the scene. The wine is full in body and mouth coating with lovely and forward flavors and balanced acididty. The wine finish long and elegant with silky tannins. This 500 case production will be gone in no-time, and for those fans of Heidi Barrett, I would not pass up any of her wines, especially when they have a fairly economical price tag attached to it (i.e. Heidi can demand high prices, but Paradigm keeps it in check with reality!)

Paloma 2006 Merlot, Estate Spring Mountain Napa Valley -- Retail 65.00 – GGWC 56.00
This must have been one of the best endeavors put together by Paloma. This limited release offers an aroma of chocolate, toffee and black cherry. The wine is a full in body with lots of intensity and juicy flavors. On the palate this wine screams with black cherries with some sweet, subtle vanilla in the background. Lush and fleshy, and all that a Merlot should be, this well-made wine is very intense and shows nicely from start to the long, elegant, silky finish.

2007 Lioco Chardonnay, Sonoma County -- Retail 23.50 – GGWC 19.99
This wine is a blend from various sites in the creek-bed soils of Dry Creek, Chalk Hill, Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley.

TALISMAN WINERY

I visited with Scott Rich from Talisman last week and had a blast tasting through his awesome Pinot Noir portfolio. Scott was the quiet, but important winemaking source behind Etude winery for almost 20 years! Scott sources his fruit from some of the highest regarded vineyards in California.

We have a SPECIAL OFFER through Sept. 12. When you buy a mixed or solid case of Talisman, not only do you receive the wine at our discounted price, we will give you FREE SHIPPING* as well.

Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir "Hawk Hill" Russian River Valley
$44.95

Strikingly inky, intense wine (courtesy of the Pommard and Dijon 115 clone that was used to make this wine) the perfumed aroma is layered with mineral, blackberry, plum, violets and tobacco. Incensed notes of sandalwood, bramble, and cedar contribute additional complexity. This wine is big and dense, with an extraordinary life ahead of it. The flavors are foreshadowed by the aromas and mingled with even more layers of toasty vanilla, brambles, and Bing cherries. The finish is very juicy and extraordinarily persistent. This will be a long-lived wine that will reward those with the patience for cellaring for a good time to come..

Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir "Red Dog" Sonoma Mountain
$44.95
Reflecting its mountainside ancestry, this wine is large-scaled, yet manages to retain elements of elegance and grace. This is a complex, layered wine with notes of sweet blueberry, dusty raspberry, star anise, and cinnamon on the nose. It manages to find that rare balance between a tight structure and a lush, round mouthfeel. Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir "Thorn Ridge Vineyard" Sonoma Coast
$47.99

Very complex nose with a melange of black plum, red cherry, and a hint of strawberry overlaid on a alluring core of tarry bass notes. The mouth is both structured and voluptuously mouthwatering with notes of Bing cherry and a slight "hint of corruption" of the sort that lends interest and complexity to the finest perfumes. Dark cherry fruit lingers form the initial entry into a very long, persistent finish. Only 339 cases produced!

Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir, Adastra Vineyard Carneros
$40.99

Seductive notes of mineral, concentrated pure strawberry and a subtle hint of violets comprise the aroma and provide a hint of the flavors to follow. The mouth opens with a silky texture and explodes into very sweet, perfectly ripe fruit and earthy minerality that adds great complexity. Overall, this wine is very elegant and exquisitely balanced. Structured, bright, and persistent, this is a beautiful wine to pair with savory dishes. 264 cases produced.

SWANSON 2004 MERLOT SPECIAL OFFER:

RETAIL 36.00 - GGWC 28.99(20% OFF) on six bottles or more!

I usually don't "promote" larger wineries, and I had to think twice to write this one up (not because of the quality, their quantity). After tasting the wine numerous times, I had to give in, and decided to give them a shot. The 2004 Swanson Merlot is a powerful, concentrated expression of the variety. The nose shows black cherry, smoke, blackberry, and espresso. The flavors in the mouth echo the aromatic expression nicely. The fine-grained tannins for which our Merlots have become known provide the round, ripe texture of this wine. While drinking surprisingly well today, this wine will improve and be enjoyable for at least the next 6-8 years. Close your eyes and you may find yourself on the Right Bank in Bordeaux.

Have a great day, and remember our motto: Always Drink Good Wine™ !

Cabernet Week at Golden Gate Wine Cellars!

Another gem in Frank’s Boutique Wine Selection™ list! 2005 Grassi Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley Retail 65.00 – GGWC 56.00!

Mark Grassi planted his four acre vineyard after consulting with longtime friend and viticulture guru at Harlan Estate, Mary Maher.
I rarely quote publications, but I will see this much Wine Spectator’s score was too low at 91 points! "Fresh and vibrant, with complex currant, blackberry, loamy earth and spicy, cedary touches that are elegant, refined, balanced and well-proportioned. Drink now through 2013. 720 cases made."
"The 2005 is the first release of Grassi Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine makes a strong first impression with its vibrant dark ruby color, nearly opaque, and still with a touch of purple. The aromas are complex: black cherry, allspice, cinnamon, ripe plum, cassis, coffee, and ginger. The flavors are lively, refreshing, and fresh, with a firm structure and the appropriate degree of acidity to wake up the palate. The alcohol level is very modest for California Cabernet."

A few other hot cabernets while they are still in stock are the 2005 Joseph Family Cabernet, which has been a real crowd pleaser the past 3 years in a row! We are offering the wine at $37.99 (Retail 44.00). This wine got a 92 point rating from Wine Enthusiast!

Gary Lipp did it again. This latest Coho 2005 Headwater release blend is delicious blend of Cabernet, Merlot, and Petit Verdot showcasing some of the best of Napa at an affordable price! This wine is lush and full in body, and loaed with pure blackstone fruit, offering good complexity and acidity. Silky finish. Very Limited Release! This awesome wine receieved a nice Wine Spectator score of 94 points! Retail 46.00 - GGWC 39.99

Our movie producing friend Doug Barr with the help from hot winemaker Celia Masyczek produced yet an ultra concentrated gem from the 2480 Hollywood & Vine winery. The 2005 Cabernet was given a 93 point rating from Wine Spectator! "A big, bold, rich and expressive style that packs in lots of flavor yet manages to be elegant and stylish without being heavy. Deep perfumed currant, floral, spice and berry flavors coat the palate, ending with ripe integrated tannins. Drink now through 2014." The wine sells at $79.99 (Retail is 90.00)

Frank’s Wine Week in Review August 9 - August 15, 2008

Another cold and foggy week in the City-By-The-Bay. A typical Mark Twain-like day – “The coldest winter I ever spend, was a summer in San Francisco.” It has been cold and foggy, but that is great to taste through a lot of wines, which I did again this week.

Before we talk about this week’s wines, I need to remind everyone that Golden Gate Wine Cellars' New York Wine Tasting is selling out fast. We have only 20 tickets left, and you can obtain yours via our website. Also for those planning to come with some friends, if you buy five tickets in a bundle, you will receive a free bottle of wine at the tasting!

Watched the movie “Bottle Shock” this week, nothing to be "shocked" about and nothing to really write home about. I do want to give you heads up on the next movie that will come out about the same subject. Robert Kamen, owner of Kamen Vineyards and Winery, and writer extraordinaire is releasing both his wine (2005 Kamen Cabernet Sauvignon, Sept 15 2008), and his movie shortly. His movie should be more detailed and informative. No, this has nothing to do with Montelena going “French,” for those who did not know, Chateau Montelena was sold to Cos D’Estournel.

On that note, we only deal with the smaller guys (and girls!), but it is amazing what a weak Dollar will do. A few months ago Duckhorn was sold for $250 Million and Stag’s Leap for $185 Million, while Montelena “only” fetched $110 Million, a steal!

Enough said, Frank’s Wine Week in Review notes.

I tasted a bunch of “stuff” that was not worth my time, but I am a nice guy and I give everyone the same time and respect, ditto for my clients. I never give my clients the cold shoulder, nor does the single bottle customer get less service versus the multi case buyer.
In this age of fast and faster, and a world of technology one seems to forget that customer service is still appreciated, and that is the main thing we “preach” at Golden Gate Wine Cellars – Take Care of That Customer, if not, he will take it elsewhere.

Jelly Roll 2006 Syrah, Santa Barbara
Retail 40.00 – GGWC 35.00

This stellar Syrah was sourced from the well-regarded Larner and Stolpman vineyards, and those familiar with these sources know that they produce killer juice! This lush, full-bodied Syrah offers a powerful blackberry and cassis aroma and flavor on the silky but intense palate. The wine “rolls” over the palate like a sweet “Jelly” candy. Limited production!

Forstwatch 2005 Merlot, Bennett Valley, Sonoma County
Retail 32.00 – 28.00

Brett Raven was David Ramey’s longtime assistant, and it shows in this latest release from this fairly new appellation (south of Santa Rosa). This cool climate appellation produced a wine with great complexity and richness. The wine exhibits plum and dark cherry fruits along with notes of spice and dark chocolate. You can open this wine before dinner and enjoy its opulence, yet pair it with a multitude of foods and find that it complements the food without overpowering it with alcohol. 175 cases produced!

Miura 2005 Syrah Antiqv2s Pisoni Vineyard
Retail 65.00 – GGWC 56.00
Pisoni is synonymous with high-quality wine, and Master Sommelier Emmanuel Kemiji (a mentor of mine while the Wine Director at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco in the early 90’s) produced an amazing wine from this property. This is a very intense wine that offers both the best from the Rhone Valley and California in one package. The wine shows an amazing amount of intensity, but at the same time is silky and lush with a touch of bacon-fat and creamy blackberries a touch of pure cocoa and spice. The wine is amazingly intense but o-so elegant one could scoop it rather than drinking out a glass.

Flying Goat '06 Pinot Noir Rio Vista, “Dijon Clone” Sta Rita Hills
Retail 45.00 – GGWC 38.00
No, not Grey Poupon, but yes, Dijon clone. The Dijon clone yielded a dark burgundy (of course!) color that foretells the depth of this wine. Upon a swirl classic notes of cherry, black cherry and holiday cranberry are unleashed. A silky texture precedes fruit notes of dried cherry, rhubarb and blackcurrants, then some nice elegant dusty tannins, a mineral-laden earthiness and more cran-cherry. Beautifully balanced with firm structure and a yin-yang of fruit notes. So…”please pass the Dijon?”
Very small production, as usual in Frank’s Boutique Wine Selections™ so hurry up!

Last week I tasted through a large amount of German Rieslings, and some really stood out.

Here we go:

Josef Bernard Kieren 2006 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling “Spatlese” Mosel
Retail 31.50 – GGWC 25.50
Only 300 cases were produced of this “Spatlese”, which means late harvest in German.
This is a vineyard that produces age worthy wines. This wine offers a very good interplay between floral flavors, mineral acidity and citrus aromas. It is crisp and transparent with precise balance and a classic Mosel profile. Long, mouthwatering finish. Perfect balance, weight and acidity, and very well-structured with a touch of tropical fruit at the end.

Johnn-Wilhelm 2007 Urziger-Wurzgarten Riesling “Auslese” Mosel
GGWC 32.50 – GGWC 26.50

This vineyard is the best-of-the-best in the village of Urzig (Mosel). Awesome aroma that jumps out of the glass! The noble sweet wine with fine residual sweetness and ripe acidity has a medium to full body that is oh-so flavorful. Lusciously spicy with hints of tropical fruit and a very long finish, this is a must have in your collection.

Our Motto: Always Drink Good Wine!

August 1, 2008

Frank’s Wine Week in review.

We are one month into the opening of our new showroom, and have met many new local faces. When your work, pleasure or wine country visit would bring you to California, please stop by and visit us!

Lots of excitement on the wine front to announce this week.

Every week I taste a bunch of wine, and this week I had some decent, good, and outstanding wines. It is the outstanding that I look for. So you see, I do “your” homework. I tasted 120 wines and came up with about 10 gems! Someone has to do the dirty work, and it might as well be me.

Carter Cellars wines are made by Nils Venge and Jeff Fontanella. All small lots from either their estate or some high-end well regarded vineyards are produced. I tasted through six of their newly released wines and three made the grade – see below.

Carter Cellars 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Coliseum Block- Napa
Retail 130.00 – GGWC 115.00

The 2006 Coliseum Block Cab is another in an impressive line of well-behaved brutes. Massive, dense black fruits pull in alongside currants, dried herbs, plums, and bittersweet chocolate to form a powerhouse Cabernet that brings the senses to attention. Only 243 cases produced.

Carter Cellars 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Beckstoffer/ToKalon - Napa Valley
Retail 130.00 – GGWC 115.00
The last two vintages of this wine from the legendary original To Kalon vineyard have garnered Spectator ratings of 95 and 96 points respectively. The ’06 could very well be a 97! This wine is a seamless montage of cassis and dark berries, with alluring notes of spice inviting the senses ever deeper into the wine’s many-nuanced flavors. Dense and concentrated, this Cab delivers the size, length, and depth one would expect from a truly great wine.

Carter Cellars 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Revilo Napa Valley
Retail 100.00 – GGWC 89.99
I would say that this is the most elegant, approachable of the bunch. This elegant wine shows off a bright, red fruit core, tempered with superbly integrated tannins. A profusion of berries, currant, and spice flavors drape themselves over a fine structure, ending in a stylish, long-drawn finish.

Grassi 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Retail 65.00 – GGWC 56.00
The 2005 is the first release of Grassi Cabernet Sauvignon. The alcohol level is very modest for California Cabernet.

Hirsch 2006 Estate Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast
Retail 65.00 – GGWC 56.00
Only 376 cases of this amazing wine were produced. Upon opening, deep earth, loam aromas emerge against a background of bergamot, black tea, Bing cherry, and a touch of toastiness. The big, broad mouthfeel harbors flavors of ripe plums and rich cherries. It is full and plush. Supported by healthy tannins, its nice acid balance is fully present through to the long, persistent finish. With air, pronounced pinot notes emerge: leather, tobacco, autumnal earth. The mid-palate broadens and the tannins integrate. David Hirsch is amazing. His knowledge of the terroir blew my mind, and I can see why he could talk for hours about this wine – it is amazing!

Dutton Goldfield 2006 Zinfandel, Morelli Lanem, Russian River Valley
Retail 45.00 – GGWC 38.00

The long, cool 06 growing season well suited the old vines at Morelli Lane, giving them plenty of time to perfectly ripen. This wine displays the soft elegance and bright raspberry/cherry fruit that makes it so prized. The 06 is a particularly easy drinking version of the old vine Zin, with its moderate alcohol, exceptionally supple tannins and bright acidity. On the nose it shows the classic Morelli frambois, coupled with lots of Bing cherry and some toasty overtones. It follows with candied cherry along with a bit of spice and toffee in the mouth, and lingers with sweet tannins and berry fruit. Its elegant balance yields a perfect pairing with foods like lasagna, many cheeses, and just about anything off the barbeque. 248 cases produced.

Vogelzang 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Barbara
Retail 30.00 – GGWC 26.00
Elegant intensity is the most appropriate way to describe the 2007 offering. This wine bursts with distinct and clear fruit expressions of pineapple, pear, and lime, complimented with a wonderful minerality reminiscent of Bordeaux Blanc that we now recognize as a classic Vogelzang Vineyard aroma profile. The mouthfeel is amazingly broad and rich, yet it maintains an excellent natural acidity true to the varietal. Seamlessly elegant from start to finish.

Lattanzio 2006 Pinot Noir, W.E. Bottoms, Russian River Valley
Retail 41.00 – GGWC 33.99

This very small, 3 acre vineyard is located near the town of Occidental in the coolest part of the appellation. This great Pinot Noir is light ruby to purple color. It offers aromas of dried herbs, a hint of clove, and fresh red cherries. Medium bodied with good concentration, silky texture and flavors of red raspberry and cranberry. Finishes firm with refreshing acidity and lingering silky tannins. 230 cases produced.

Lattanzio 2006 Syrah Fredrick Ranch, Sonoma Coast
Retail 40.00 – GGWC 31.50
Only 100 cases of this puppy were produced, and I can tell you that every drop of this juice was meticulously selected and evaluated before it was bottled. This stellar wine possesses a deep plum color that is accompanied by aromas of smoked meats, black cherries, and black currants. This exquisite, medium to full-bodied, delicious Sonoma Coast Syrah offers good purity and length as well as a broad, dense concentration, and velvet-textured mouthfeel. Enjoy it over the next 4-6 years.

Dillon 2005 Chardonnay, Estate Yountville Napa Valley
Retail 26.00 – GGWC 21.00

Only 250 cases of this stainless steel fermented (FYI – no oak!) were produced. It offers a fresh kiwi, guava-like aroma with similar tropical flavors on the palate. The wine is full in body with a bright, balanced acidity that generates an appealing mouthfeel and leaves a lingering finish on the palate.

Esoterica 2007 Riesling, Rossi Vineyard Rutherford Napa
Retail 20.00 – GGWC 17.00
Only 340 cases of this wine were produced. Enjoy this wine; it offers the perfect balance between sweetness and acid. It has a lovely nose as only Riesling can, and the flavor is full of flowers and fruit. Comically enough, as young as this wine is now, I think that it will age very gracefully for many years. To me it has the characteristics that a Riesling needs to sit in the bottle and get better and better, just like some older Mosel Riesling would.

Chasseur 2005 Lorenzo Chardonnay (Robert Parker) - 94 Points
Retail 60.00 - GGWC 52.00 VERY LIMITED!!
Readers looking for a Grand Cru Chablis-styled California white should check out the 2005 Chardonnay Lorenzo Vineyard. Sensational notes of lemon, citrus blossoms, wet stones, orange rind, and guava as well as an unmistakable minerality are followed by a wine of great ripeness, purity, and full-bodied power as well as length. Despite the fact that it was aged in nearly two-thirds new French oak, the wood is impossible to discern in the wine’s aroma and flavor profiles. It should drink well for 3-4 years.

Hestan 2005 Stephanie Cabernet Sauvignon (Wine Spectator 93 Points)
Retail 60.00- GGWC 49.95

"A complex, rich and creamy-textured style, with layers of currant, mocha, wild berry and vanilla-laced oak, all folding together nicely. Tightly focused, long and persistent, with an excellent balance of tannins and acidity. Best from 2009 through 2015. 930 cases made."

The Halleck folks have made a real name for themselves, and their portfolio of stellar wines is really amazing.
I just tasted with the Hallecks, and walked away very impressed!

Halleck Vineyard 2006 Sauvignon Blanc “Little Sister”, Russian River Valley
Retail 31.00 – GGWC 26.00
This refreshing Sancerre style Sauvignon Blanc has a nose that hints of starfruit, kiwi skins, wet river stones and exotic tropicalfruit. The color is pale straw. The crisp, palate cleansing mouthfeel, filled with citrus and minerals, is nicely integrated from front to back with a long lingering finish.

Halleck Vineyard 2007 Gewurztraminer, Russian River Valley
Retail 33.00 – GGWC 28.00
This is probably the most exotic, aromatic Gewurztraminer I have ever tasted. The sexy, lively perfumy flavors jump out of the glass. On the palate this elegant, medium bodied wine offers a velvet-like texture with an array of flavors – mango, lychee and apricot. It finishes long and elegant.

Halleck Vineyard 2006 Pinot Noir “The Farm”Russian River Valley
Retail 60.00 – GGWC 50.00
This is a Pinot Noir for the ages! It offers a big intense nose of ripe fruit with a touch of toasty vanilla and a hint of a-typical Pinot earth! The wine is lush and intense on the palate with a rich buy plush structure, offering great red stone fruit on the mid palate. This wine is extremely well made and its finish is remarkably long and polished. Only 250 cases produced!

Fantesca 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, Spring Mountain Napa Valley
Retail 65.00 – GGWC 59.99
This is Heidi Barrett’s latest venture, and it shows beautifully. If you liked the 2003, you would love this; it is more amazing than the 2003 and the price is the same, even with Heidi on board! Another winner, this is only the third release from this winery. It displays the finesse and opulent style that are the hallmarks of Spring Mountain District. When swirled, notes of spice and berries capture your attention. When tasted, its rich and supple body tantalizes the palate. Only 500 cases produced!

Coho 2005 SummitVine Ranch Cabernet, Diamond Mountain Napa Valley
Retail 65.00 – GGWC 56.00
Coho’s SummitVine Ranch Cabernet is a big burly wine on both the nose and palate, loaded with concentrated fruit. This is a stunning wine with tons of intensity and luscious fruit. Impeccably balanced and complex. Tannins are there, but not overly aggressive. A must have!

Redmon Family Vineyards 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate, Napa Valley
Retail 75.00 – GGWC 64.99 - SHOWROOM SPECIAL 59.99 (ends July 31)
Awesome wine and an awesome family. Lisa and Scott (husband and wife, owners, winemakers) gave me the premier opportunity to taste and purchase this new release. I jumped on it like a hawk on his prey. This is one of those sleeper wines that would leave many of the big-names in the dust when tasted side-by-side, which I do often. Grapes harvested from one of the last remaining dry-farms in the valley produces complex fruit flavors and rich deep color. The wine's aroma is very intense and intriguing. The palate is coated with luscious fruit and the finish does not seem to end. Each bottle is personalized with hand-numbering. Only 250 cases produced!

Andrew Geoffrey 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Diamond Mtn. Napa Valley
Retail 80.00 – GGWC 73.99
An awesome follow-up to their stellar 2002 and 2003 vintage. Again, a very limited production. Distinct and intense nose of spicy berries, highlighted with bright blueberry and a touch of leather and coffee. Intense on impact, loaded with flavors and of viscous and ripe black fruit, good tannin structure.

Sage 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, Mount Veeder Napa Valley
Retail 72.00 - GGWC 63.99
Another revelation in Frank’s Boutique Wine Selections™ book. The wine is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec sourced from the Sage estate. The wine has lots of intensity on the nose with hints of black cherry, boysenberry and a touch of chocolate and spice. The wine is full in body with a touch of sweet earth, which is somewhat a-typical for Mt. Veeder AVA, lots of blackberry. The palate is smooth and the finish is silky and soft, and very long-lasting. Only 450 cases produced.

Sage 2005 Veeder Crest Proprietary Red, Napa Valley
Retail 45.00 – GGWC 38.99
This wine is partially from the Sage estate (40% Cabernet); Merlot (30%) is from Gardner Vineyard and Cabernet Franc (30%) from Dimate Vineyard. This wine is equally pleasing on the palate, almost silky on approach. Medium to full in body with a slight silkier touch versus its Cabernet Big Brother. This wine offers lots of structure and flavor. Definitely a winner in my book.

Gain Bay 2005 Andrew’s Cuvee, Napa Valley
Retail 24.00 - GGWC 19.99
This wine is made by my very best friend Peter Posert. We worked together, drank together and attended each other’s weddings. As a matter a fact he was my best man! You would think that I am pushing my best friend's wine! No I am not. Even his wine undergoes the same rigorous treatment I give every other wine. This blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cabernet Franc, and 12% Merlot was sourced from very reputable Napa Valley vineyards (can’t disclose them, but I can tell you that they are very good!)
This medium to full bodied wine has a very nice aroma of bright red stone fruit with a hint of spiciness on both nose and palate. A subtle touch of toasty vanilla harmonizes this well-rounded, great value wine. On the mid-palate plum and black currant dominate while the silky long finish shows modest tannins that will allow for drinking now. This wine should drink well for 4-6 years. 800 cases produced!

Buoncristiani 2005 Syrah "Artistico" Napa Valley
Retail 65.00- GGWC 55.00
W.A.W (What A Wine!) The ‘05 blend was sourced from small lots harvested exclusively from the Caldwell Vineyard in Coombsville, the Stagecoach Vineyard in the Vaca Mountains above Oakville, and Larry Hyde’s vineyard in Oak Knoll. These three vineyard sources are some of the most sought after in the Napa Valley, and it is no surprise that the final result was an amazing wine! The Buoncristiani brothers created the series “Artistico” to fuse winemaking passion with other forms of art expression. The different vineyard and barrel components are blended in several phases creating optimum complexity while retaining balance, varietal character, and superior quality. As always the Buoncristiani Boys only produce small quantities, so that means that this wine will sell out very fast.

Peacock 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon “Estate” Spring Mountain Napa Valley
Retail 85.00 – GGWC 74.99 – SHOWROOM SPECIAL 69.99 (ends July 31)
Only 600 cases of this big, bold estate wine were produced this year! And I say only, as the demand for this wine is always high, and that should not be a surprise! This lush, powerful wine is loaded with intense black stone fruit, and has an incredible balance of ripe plums, black stone fruit, a touch of crème de cassis and subtle acid. The wine has an amazingly long and soft finish.

Bonanno 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Retail 24.00 – GGWC 17.99
The word Bon Anno translates to a GOOD YEAR, and I can tell you that the 2006 vintage was just that. It reminded me a whole lot of the 1997 vintage in which great wine was made and larger crops were harvested.
This wine was made from grapes purchased from some stellar Napa Valley vineyards and the final product is worth a look at. The wine has a nice perfumy aroma of Bing cherries, and is medium to full in body. The palate is nicely coated with lush flavors and fruit and it finishes with nice silky tannins. I told you before; it does not always need to cost a lot to be very good!

Hoopes 2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Retail 70.00 – GGWC 59.99
The 2005 Hoopes Family Cabernet Sauvignon is a very intense and complex wine. The aromas of black stone fruit jump out of the glass. On the palate you will encounter hints of a spice cabinet combined with lush blackberry and raspberry flavors. The wine finishes long with ample tannins. I let this wine breathe for about 2 hours and it was well worth it!

Fountain Head Cellars 2005 Cabernet (Morisoli), Napa Valley
Retail 50.00 – GGWC 42.99
With great patience, Jason and Mike have crafted another stellar example of the Morisoli-Borges vineyard. It’s a flat-out fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon. Densely structured, with fine, integrated tannins, this beautifully dark wine opens up slowly in the glass to reveal an intriguing nose of haunting, woodsy-mushroom aromas and high-toned cherry seltzer and raspberry liqueur. Showing strong hints of Rutherford dust on the nose and palate, the wine tastes of rich black cherry, plum, and blackberry, brightened by firm acidity. Like many young Napa Valley Cabernets, it’s quite enjoyable at this early stage, but it’s also an eminently age-worthy wine that should improve with several years in the bottle.

Hauck Cellars 2005 Meritage, Sonoma County
Retail 45.00 – GGWC 36.99
This great Meritage is a blend of 73% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% each Petit Verdot and Malbec. This great quality wine is yet another of Frank’s Boutique Wine Selections™ finds. This full-bodied wine is chocolate covered cherries in a glass, with hints of lavender with a subtle touch of toasty vanilla. Limited availability with only 50 cases produced!

Piocho 2005 Proprietary Red “Happy Canyon” Santa Ynez
Retail 34.00- GGWC 28.99
Doug Margerum concocted yet another great wine! This Cabernet Sauvignon based blend with a good dose of Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the beautiful Happy Canyon Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley is a wonderful balance between the restraint and balance of a true Bordeaux with the ripe fruit of California. Great value and a real crowd-pleaser!

Trespass 2005 Estate Merlot, Napa Valley –
Retail 50.00 – GGWC 42.00
Kirk Venge did it again! This limited production all Estate Merlot is amazing. It is not a wimpy, soft silky wine! This baby is amazing, in-your-face, dense black stone fruit 2005 Merlot. Hints of blue and blackberry fruit combined with a touch of mocha and chocolate are found in this powerful but o so elegant, full-bodied Merlot. Its finish is long and robust and can be consumed now and over the next 5-10 years. 200 cases produced only!

Matthiasson 2005 Merlot, Red Hen Vineyard, Napa ValleyRetail 80.00 – GGWC 69.99
This is not you’re a-typical Merlot! This puppy is amazingly big and intense, very Bordeaux-like in style. I was surprised that it did not contain any Cabernet Sauvignon or Petit Verdot, as it has that color and density.
The wine has great structure, lots of richness and an amazing aromatic profile. The vineyard is known for strong cherry and chocolate aromas, and it is balanced by notes of tea and earth. Long lasting finish.
The bad thing – only 70 cases produced!

Branham 2006 Zinfandel Rockpile, Sonoma
Retail 30.00 – GGWC 23.99
This appellation has become one of the most sought after for those who love Zinfandel! Branham planted this vineyard in 1994, not knowing that this would become a “collector-like” appellation. The results are amazing. Today he cannot produce enough of his stellar Zin! The vines are head trained and non-irrigated. Deep ruby in color with brilliant purple tones, ample dark berry aromas with like smoky tones. The signature blackberry flavor of the Rockpile Zinfandel sings at the finish. 350 cases produced.

Ottimino 2005 Zinfandel, Russian River Valley
Retail 35.00 – GGWC 29.99
Only 400 cases of this old-vine Russian Valley Zin were produced. Blackberry and black cherry dominate the aromas, with white pepper and oak chiming in. The flavors add hints of blueberry, raspberry and cassis. Bold fruit at entry leads to a broad middle, and the finish is firm and persistent. This Zinfandel was designed for its versatility with food, and its heartiness should lead you to a broad spectrum of exotic pairings.

Frank Family 2006 Zinfandel, Napa Valley
Retail 38.00 – GGWC 32.75
Frank Family Vineyards’ 2006 Zinfandel (92% Zinfandel and 8% Petite Sirah) is dark and rich in color, reminiscent of violets. This classic Zinfandel leads with sweet blackberry jam, white and black pepper and clove spice. Further opulence emerges as layers of black cherry, blueberry and Asian spice are exposed. The palate is big, bold and ripe with juicy brambleberry and warm plum pudding, supported by integrated tannin and spice, giving a full mid palate and setting the stage for the long supple finish.

The 2006 Pinot Noir opens beautifully in the glass, with refined aromas of ripe red cherry, violet, strawberry, and barrel toast. Its bright acidity balances nicely with rich flavors of red plums, black cherry, brown spice, and anise. Additional cellaring of this, our premiere vintage of Sierra Madre Pinot Noir, will encourage development of classic earthy, forest-floor notes in the wine, and will hasten the softening of its subtle but firm tannins. Long on the palate, this wine offers a sleek silky, cherry-strawberry finish. It will age gracefully in the bottle for many years to come.

B Kosuge 2006 'The Shop' Pinot Noir, Carneros
Retail 36.00 – GGWC 30.99
This well-made wine is not super ripe or heavily extracted, and has a modest dose of toasty vanilla. Those who know the 2004 & 2005 will note that the 2006 version is a bit darker and more brooding, with some spice and smoke in the background. It shares with the 2004 a lusciousness and fruitiness on the palate that I like quite a bit. If you are the patient type, it should reward laying down for awhile, but it does not need a lot of time to open up. 500 cases produced.

Freeman 2006 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
Retail 46.00 – GGWC 39.25
Winemaking team Ed Kurtzman and Akiko Freeman doing it again. This stellar vineyard (which is used by many other great wineries in the Russian River Valley), was the source of this latest release. This wine showcases both of their Burgundian tendencies. The nose of pomegranate and a touch of earthiness give way to lush, ripe plums on the rich palate. The wine ends elegantly with soft round, silky tannins.

Sierra Madre 2006 Estate Chardonnay, Santa Maria ValleyRetail 35.00 – GGWC 29.99The 2006 Sierra Madre Vineyard Chardonnay is our first vintage of this fine white varietal. In the glass, the wine bursts with aromas of fresh green apple, vanilla bean, toasty oak and wet stones. The long hang-time the vintage was afforded is evident – the fully ripened fruit offers up lush, unctuous flavors of pineapple, mango, banana and white peach, and a touch of minerality… the perfect combination of fruit-forward delivery, balanced weight on the palate, and a long, elegant finish. This stylish Chardonnay will provide excellent drinkability in the short-term, but will continue to develop wonderfully in bottle with additional cellaring at cool temperatures.

Graziano Fontana 2006 Mueller Thurgau, Trentino Italy
Retail 22.00 – GGWC 18.00
Mueller Thurgau is somewhat the ugly duckling in the wine white industry. During my blind tasting of this wine this ugly duckling turned into a beautiful swan! This wine has an exquisite perfumed aroma that seems to jump out the glass. The wine is silky and elegant on the palate, offering lush white stone peaches and crisp green apple-like flavors. A spectacular wine that is pleasing from start to finish.

Pey Marin 2007 Riesling, The Shell Mound Marin County
Retail 25.00 – GGWC 20.00
This is not your typical Riesling. This wine redefines California Riesling and brings more purity, freshness and finesse. It required meticulous work in the vineyard, and unlike most red and most white wines, once the grapes were picked, very little was done to it in the winery. It sees no oak, no malolactic and no blending. In short, what was farmed is what you get. And what we have is very special indeed. Crisp, with hints of lemon candy, racy and dry – the perfect wine for any seafood.

Saxon Brown 2006 Semillon “Casa Santamaria” Sonoma
Retail 24.00 – GGWC 18.99
I love this wine and its style: lively and refreshing with good food affinity. The ‘06 Semillon fits the bill. In addition to vibrant white peach, citrus blossom and fig flavors, the wine offers a rich, slightly yeasty mouth-feel and a lingering creamy finish. NO OAK. Only 300 cases produced of this 75 year old vine vineyard!

Copain 2007 Viognier “Tous Ensemble”, Mendocino
Retail 25.00 – GGWC 18.99
The Copain guys have always amazed me with their personality and winemaking skills. This latest release offers fleshy aromas of peach, apricot, and green papaya that carry well to the palate picking up a slight touch of crisp minerality. Sound acidity keeps the wine refreshing and avoids the overt fatter waxy texture this varietal can have when lower in acidity. Winemaker Wells Guthrie “beefed” up the body with 10% Roussanne from the James Berry vineyard, which lends extra length and complexity. The wine is well balanced with a long, pleasant finish.

Cold Heaven 2006 Viognier “Vogelzang” Santa Barbara
Retail 25.00 – GGWC 20.99
Lush tropical fruits and exotic white flowers overlay an invigorating acidity that keeps the wine fresh and lively. Morgan is very careful with her Viognier harvesting at just that paradoxical moment when both a sylph-like sleekness and a siren's seductiveness share center stage. A lovely wine.

Leo Steen 2007 Chenin Blanc, Dry Creek Valley
Retail 23.00 – GGWC 18.99
Only 350 cases of this almost 30 year-old vine Chenin Blanc were produced. It is grown in a loamy soil in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma. This wine has a pale straw complexion with nice aromas of spring flowers and lemon peel. This medium bodied summer wine has flavors of green apple and citrus accompanied by lively acidity, which leads to a crisp finish.

Matthiasson 2007 Proprietary White Blend, Napa Valley
Retail 39.00 – GGWC 33.00
This wine is a new-world conception of a mythical ideal old-world wine…a California wine with a spiritual connection to Friuli, Italy and Graves, France. It really rocks, and you cannot have enough of this in your cellar! It is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Ribolla Gialla, and Semillon. The Sauvignon brings a clean fresh citrusy acidity. The Ribolla Gialla gives a unique minerality, spice, and structure to the blend. The Semillon contributes viscosity and the ripe fig and beeswax character that adds gravity and weight. The acidity and fruit expression is balanced by the rich lees character and the sweetness of the oak. There is interplay in the wine between lightness and richness, and focus and complexity. The Ribolla Gialla, with its weight and slight tannic grip, ties the wine together and brings a dimension of length and interest. 200 cases produced!
