Igneous 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley – Retail 105.00 – GGWC 95.00
This winery has turned lots of heads the last couple of years, and they might have hit the jackpot with this latest release. For those who bought the 2003 and 2004 vintages, I can honestly say that this one tips them both. Igneous was created in 2002 after the owners were able to secure some Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Thorevilos Vineyard, a vineyard owned and operated by David Abreu in St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain. The 2005 is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot sourced from both the Thorevilos Vineyard, located in the eastern hills of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain, which is owned and managed by David Abreu, and the Huckfeldt Ranch Vineyard a.k.a. the Igneous estate, located in the Coombsville area of east Napa and also managed by David Abreu. This wine continues to develop wonderfully! The visual begins with an incredible deep garnet and plum color. Deep and complex aromas of ripe black cherry and blackberry delightfully lift out from the glass. Moments later they are met with surrounding scents of barrel vanillin reminiscent to past memories in a candle shop. The volume and viscosity of this wine is seamless from front to back. Showy flavors of cherry, cassis and dried berry provide great intensity of fruit. The integration of tannin and structure in the back of the palate carry this wine’s lengthy finish. Seductive in its demeanor, this wine has plenty of personality. Enjoy now to 2018 or longer

White Rock 04 Cabernet Sauvignon “Laureate” Estate, Napa Valley -- Retail 55.00 – GGWC 46.00
I can’t believe it but White Rock is approaching 20 years in business! I recall fondly their 1987 Claret, which was their second release. This vintage could have been claret as well, but since it has 75% Cabernet (as well as 20 % Cabernet Franc, 3 % Merlot, and 2 % Petit Verdot, the “Laureate” was born. The Vandendriesche’s have an amazing property in the Stag’s Leap appellation of the Napa Valley. The vineyards nestled on and between a few mountain slopes, this estate has been able to produce old-world-style wines from its property for nearly two decades now. I would say that the 2004 is one for the books! It exhibits powerful, dark fruit aromas and a rich, broad mouth-feel. Ripe blackberry and currant are complemented by undertones of coffee and vanilla bean. Notes of chocolate and a hint of licorice linger through a finish of lush tannins and dark plum.

Page - Revolver 2005 Cabernet Franc “The Fury”, Napa Valley -- Retail 55.00 – GGWC 44.99
As with the other wines of Page Wine Cellars, this is artisan winemaking at its best; hand-worked and hand-crafted. This is no ordinary Cab Franc! Brash, yet supple...the Cabernet Franc shows its true colors
by expressing deep blackberries laced with a hint of dried thyme. This wine is aged for 28 months in 100% French oak. Truly an eyebrow raiser...enjoy!!! (Yes, there is a story behind the nick-name, ‘The Fury’...but it is unbefitting for print)

Gargiulo 2005 Aprile “Super Oakville Red” Napa Valley --Retail 50.00 – GGWC 44.00
Gargiulo’s Super Oakville Red Aprile is their “Super Tuscan.” It is produced from a 1 1/2 acre block on the Money Road Ranch (Estate), in the heart of Napa Valley’s Oakville district. It has aromas of violet; cherry, sage and wild flowers. On the palate the aromas translate into lush flavors of currant, black cherry and blueberry all supported by ripe tannins which create a dusty finish. The mouth feel of this wine is lush and lingering, almost visceral. For their interpretation of its ‘Super Tuscan’ 97 Sangiovese and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon were blended to craft a wine with a deep ruby color, complexity and long, broad finish.
Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir "Red Dog" Sonoma Mountain -- Retail 50.00 – GGWC $44.95
Reflecting its mountainside ancestry, this wine is large-scaled, yet manages to retain elements of elegance and grace. This is a complex, layered wine with notes of sweet blueberry, dusty raspberry, star anise, and cinnamon on the nose. It manages to find that rare balance between a tight structure and a lush, round mouthfeel. In the mouth, sweet red fruit, spicy vanilla notes, and an alluring flavor profile that is backed by loads of very fine-grained tannins. There are subtle layers of orange zest, cocoa and raspberry. We recommend decanting for immediate enjoyment. While approachable now, this (big) Red Dog should really start to show its best in a few more years. Only 272 cases produced.

2006 Lioco Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard, Sonoma Coast -- Retail 60.00- GGWC 52.99
Only 256 cases were produced! Here, Pinot Noir's orchestral prowess is on display. The seductive Mount Eden clone at David Hirsch's property hits octaves so high, you wonder how such an elixir came from humble grapes. It's as though a liqueur was made from rose petals and red raspberries. **LIMITED PRODUCTION**

Paradigm 2005 Merlot, Estate Napa Valley -- Retail 50.00 - GGWC 44.99
Paradigm continues to produce very consistent delicious wines. The 2005 release was one of the smallest on record, but one of their best effort yet to date! The wine kicks off with a deep ruby color and is offers a pleasant, but intense aroma of black stone fruits, a hint of spice and toastiness. On the palate a similar flavor profile works it way through the center with ripe fruit flavors predominating the scene. The wine is full in body and mouth coating with lovely and forward flavors and balanced acididty. The wine finish long and elegant with silky tannins. This 500 case production will be gone in no-time, and for those fans of Heidi Barrett, I would not pass up any of her wines, especially when they have a fairly economical price tag attached to it (i.e. Heidi can demand high prices, but Paradigm keeps it in check with reality!)

Paloma 2006 Merlot, Estate Spring Mountain Napa Valley -- Retail 65.00 – GGWC 56.00
This must have been one of the best endeavors put together by Paloma. This limited release offers an aroma of chocolate, toffee and black cherry. The wine is a full in body with lots of intensity and juicy flavors. On the palate this wine screams with black cherries with some sweet, subtle vanilla in the background. Lush and fleshy, and all that a Merlot should be, this well-made wine is very intense and shows nicely from start to the long, elegant, silky finish.

2007 Lioco Chardonnay, Sonoma County -- Retail 23.50 – GGWC 19.99
This wine is a blend from various sites in the creek-bed soils of Dry Creek, Chalk Hill, Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley. This wine is flavorful and aromatic on impact. Very well balanced, and very well priced!

Vogelzang 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Barbara -- GGWC 32.00 – GGWC 27.99
Elegant intensity is the most appropriate way to describe the 2007 offering. This wine bursts with distinct and clear fruit expressions of pineapple, pear, and lime, complimented with a wonderful minerality reminiscent of Bordeaux Blanc that we now recognize as a classic Vogelzang Vineyard aroma profile. The mouthfeel is amazingly broad and rich, yet it maintains an excellent natural acidity true to the varietal. Seamlessly elegant from start to finish.

Lioco Winery
-------------------------
I visited with the owners of Lioco this week and we tasted through the entire portfolio.
Out of their entire portfolio I tasted I selected four wines for Frank’s Boutique Wine Selection™ of the week. A few of them will sell out very fast (Charles Heintz Chardonnay and Hirsch Pinot Noir), so hurry!

2006 Chardonnay, Charles Heintz Sonoma Coast
Retail 50.00 – GGWC 43.00

The rich, amber color suggests the use of oak barrels (none were used). The perfume is at once exotic and high toned recalling night blooming jasmine, ginger, and lemon blossoms. But there are deeper, bass-tones too like raw honey and wet slate. The attack is mouth-coating, demonstrating the wine’s prowess through its sheer viscosity. Still, a vibrant acidity cuts through the honeycomb, candied ginger, and lemon peel flavors.
Only 332 cases produced!

2007 Chardonnay, Sonoma County
Retail 23.50 – GGWC 19.99

This wine is a blend from various sites in the creek-bed soils of Dry Creek, Chalk Hill, Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley. This wine is flavorful and aromatic on impact. Very well balanced, and very well priced!

2006 Proprietary Red “Indica” Mendocino
Retail 22.50 – GGWC 18.99

This blend of Petite Sirah and Carignane is a fun Fall/Winter blend from the guys at Lioco. Bright, and lively on its feet. A wine of medium weight and moderate alcohol. Seductive and feminine with flesh in all the right places. Driven by Morello cherries, violets and freshly ground Moroccan spice. Reminds me of a young Dolcetto or a cru Beaujolais.

2006 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard, Sonoma Coast
Retail 60.00- GGWC 52.99

TALISMAN WINERY

I visited with Scott Rich from Talisman last week and had a blast tasting through his awesome Pinot Noir portfolio. Scott was the quiet, but important winemaking source behind Etude winery for almost 20 years! Scott sources his fruit from some of the highest regarded vineyards in California.

We have a SPECIAL OFFER through Sept. 12. When you buy a mixed or solid case of Talisman, not only do you receive the wine at our discounted price, we will give you FREE SHIPPING* as well.

Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir "Hawk Hill" Russian River Valley
$44.95

Strikingly inky, intense wine (courtesy of the Pommard and Dijon 115 clone that was used to make this wine) the perfumed aroma is layered with mineral, blackberry, plum, violets and tobacco. Incensed notes of sandalwood, bramble, and cedar contribute additional complexity. This wine is big and dense, with an extraordinary life ahead of it. The flavors are foreshadowed by the aromas and mingled with even more layers of toasty vanilla, brambles, and Bing cherries. The finish is very juicy and extraordinarily persistent. This will be a long-lived wine that will reward those with the patience for cellaring for a good time to come..

Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir "Red Dog" Sonoma Mountain
$44.95
Reflecting its mountainside ancestry, this wine is large-scaled, yet manages to retain elements of elegance and grace. This is a complex, layered wine with notes of sweet blueberry, dusty raspberry, star anise, and cinnamon on the nose. It manages to find that rare balance between a tight structure and a lush, round mouthfeel. Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir "Thorn Ridge Vineyard" Sonoma Coast
$47.99

Very complex nose with a melange of black plum, red cherry, and a hint of strawberry overlaid on a alluring core of tarry bass notes. The mouth is both structured and voluptuously mouthwatering with notes of Bing cherry and a slight "hint of corruption" of the sort that lends interest and complexity to the finest perfumes. Dark cherry fruit lingers form the initial entry into a very long, persistent finish. Only 339 cases produced!

Talisman 2005 Pinot Noir, Adastra Vineyard Carneros
$40.99

Seductive notes of mineral, concentrated pure strawberry and a subtle hint of violets comprise the aroma and provide a hint of the flavors to follow. The mouth opens with a silky texture and explodes into very sweet, perfectly ripe fruit and earthy minerality that adds great complexity. Overall, this wine is very elegant and exquisitely balanced. Structured, bright, and persistent, this is a beautiful wine to pair with savory dishes. 264 cases produced.
